Historic NASA mission to ‘touch’ the sun to kick off this week

Image
It’s been a long time coming, but  NASA’s Parker Solar Probe  is finally just days away from its historic launch towards the star that hosts planet Earth, and every living thing mankind knows of. It’s sure to be a mission of many ‘firsts’ and scientists are hoping to learn more about the star than ever before. At the moment, the launch window is scheduled to open at exactly 3:33 a.m. EDT. The launch will take place from Space Launch Complex 37 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida, and you’ll be able to watch it all go down live. The mission will see the Parker Solar Probe get within roughly 3.9 million miles of the Sun. That sounds like a long ways away, but it’s actually incredibly close by Solar System standards. Consider how you feel on a clear summer day when the Sun is beaming down on you. That heat you feel as the light hits your skin is being generated over 90 million miles away. At less than four million miles, the temperatures are hot enough to melt steel. N...

Snapchat’s new design is driving users away in bunches

Image
The ephemeral social media company revealed in its latest earnings report that its daily active user count has dipped, attributing the decline to early frustrations with its new-look app. Snap reported 188 million daily active users during the last quarter — falling short of Wall Street’s expected 192 million and dropping from last quarter’s 191 million. The Los Angeles-based social network reported $262 million in revenue, beating the $250.4 million expected by analysts, and lost 14 cents per share. Wall Street had forecast a loss of 17 cents per share for the second quarter. Saudi Arabia’s Prince Alwaleed bin Talal announced soon after the results that he had finalized a $250 million deal in May to buy a 2.3 percent stake. Shares in Snap climbed more than 12 percent in after-hours trading before reversing course and going flat. Snapchat has been trying to please its users ever since its first redesign in November in an attempt to simplify and streamline the user experience. Features ...

Apple Watch saves man from hole in his heart

Image
We’ve heard of a handful of cases of the Apple Watch alerting its wearer to life-threatening health conditions in the past, and it seems we have yet another one to add to the list. When 24-year-old Mike Love received warnings from his wearable that his resting heart rate was well above average, he decided to let his doctor in Sydney, Australia, know. That’s when things got interesting. According to Love’s Apple Watch, his heart rate while sleeping was hitting as high as 140 beats per minute. The normal range is closer to 60 bpm, so doctors decided to run a battery of tests. They ended up finding a number of things, including a previously undiagnosed hole in Love’s heart, as well as a condition related to his lung. Love’s lung issue stemmed from his heart as well, with his lung circulating into the wrong atrium, leading the blood in the lung to be isolated from the rest of his circulatory system. The hole in his heart wasn’t immediately life-threatening and had likely been there since h...

Tesla board mulling Musk’s idea to take company private

Image
Tesla said on Wednesday its board is evaluating Chief Executive Elon Musk’s idea of taking the company private after he brought the matter up for discussion last week. Musk took Tesla shareholders and the stock market by surprise on Tuesday by  announcing on Twitter  he was considering taking the loss-making electric carmaker private at $420 a share. In his first tweet he said funding was secured but provided no details. That would mark the biggest such transaction in history, worth more than $70 billion. In a statement on Tesla’s website on Wednesday, six of Tesla’s nine directors said the board had met several times over the last week to discuss the idea and was “taking the appropriate next steps to evaluate this.” They said the board also addressed the issue of how to fund such a deal, but gave no details. Tesla’s shares were down slightly, at $377.38, in morning trading on Wednesday after  closing up 11 percent , at $379.57, on Tuesday. In a letter to shareholders aft...

Galaxy S7 phones vulnerable to hacking, researchers say

Image
Samsung’s Galaxy S7 smartphones contain a microchip security flaw, uncovered earlier this year, that put tens of millions of devices at risk to hackers looking to spy on their users, researchers told Reuters. The Galaxy S7 and other smartphones made by Samsung Electronics were previously thought to be immune to  a security vulnerability known as Meltdown , which researchers said affected most of the world’s PCs, smartphones and other computing devices. Researchers from Austria’s Graz Technical University said they have figured out a way to exploit the Meltdown vulnerability to attack Galaxy S7 handsets. The team plans to release their findings on Wednesday at the Black Hat security conference in Las Vegas. They are looking into Meltdown’s impact on other makes and models of smartphones and expect to uncover more vulnerable devices in the near future, researcher Michael Schwarz said. “There are potentially even more phones affected that we don’t know about yet,” he said. “There are ...

Let your heart guide the way, Sachin Tendulkar’s advice to Virat Kohli

Image
He has “been there and done that” which is the reason why  Sachin Tendulkar ’s singular piece of advice for  Virat Kohli  is to worry less and follow his instincts. For a significant part of his 24-year career, Tendulkar shouldered the burden of Indian batting and Kohli is performing the same role in present day. Despite his classic 149 and 51 in the opening Test against England, India lost by 31 runs and there has been a lot of advice for the Indian captain. When asked about what would he tell Kohli, Tendulkar told ESPN Cricinfo: “I would say, just continue, he’s doing a fantastic job so just continue. Don’t worry about what’s happening around you, keep your focus on what you want to achieve, and let your heart guide the way.” The highest run-getter in Tests and ODIs wants Kohli to remain passionate about his goal. “Along the way, there will be plenty of things said and done, but eventually, if you are passionate about what you want in life, then the results will invaria...

Don’t see any reason to part ways with Stephen Constantine till Asian Cup: AIFF

Image
Stephen Constantine will continue as India’s national football coach at least till the 2019 Asian Cup, AIFF general secretary Kushal Das has said, putting to rest speculation about an abrupt sacking following complaints by senior players. Terming the murmurs around Constantine as hearsay circulating in the social media, the top All India Football Federation (AIFF) office-bearer said they don’t see a plausible reason to part ways with the coach till the end of the continental showpiece, when his contract expires. In his second spell with the senior team, the British coach oversaw a dream 13-match unbeaten run that ended with a 1-2 defeat to Kyrgyzstan in an inconsequential away final group game of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup qualifying campaign in March. By the time India suffered that rare recent reverse in Bishkek, the team had made it to the Asian Cup, scheduled to be held in the UAE from January 5 to February 1. “We don’t see any reason to remove him. He has delivered the results, and mo...

HOW CAN WE MAKE TECHNOLOGY HEALTHIER FOR HUMANS

Image
IN A WELL-KNOWN  parable, a group of blind men encounters an elephant. Each man touches a different part of the elephant and receives very different tactile feedback. Their later descriptions of the elephant to each other disagree, though each individual’s description is accurate and captures one portion of the elephant: a tusk, a leg, an ear. Humans often have only partial information and struggle to understand the feelings and observations of others about the same problem or situation, even though those feelings and observations may be absolutely accurate and valid in that person’s context. Our relationships with technology are similar: Each of us relates to technology in a unique, highly personal way. We lose or cede control, stability, and fulfillment in a million different ways. As Leo Tolstoy wrote in the novel  Anna Karenina , “All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.” In the same vein, the road back from unhappiness, the path to taki...
